my doodle style over the years! ๐Ÿ’œ {20-22}

From September of 2020:

…to July of 2022:

Let’s check out how my
doodling style has changed
over the last 2 years!

Hello buddies! Welcome back to Maggie’s Doodles! I thought it would be so fun to see how my doodling style has changed over the years!

I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid, but only started creating my own doodle style when I revamped this blog. (It was first called Chickadee Lover Maggie, but I rebranded it in November 2020! You can read that post here.)

I’m gonna chat about differences and similarities I’ve seen in the first way I doodled, all the way to how I doodle now! Let’s get started!

my doodle style over the years!

pen โžผ

I used to use Papermate ballpoint pens (first doodle above), but the inconsistency in ink and the edginess of the lines led me to fine point Sharpies! It matches my style more and has allowed me to grow as an artist.

style โžผ

I went from experimental, to more professional, to a relaxed doodling style! I first had to get a feel for how I like to doodle. Then I took what I learned in that phase and streamlined my doodles. More recently, I’ve enjoyed doodling in a more creative, one-take way! I kind of combined professionalism and experimentalism haha

series โžผ

I’ve shared month-long, week-long, and weekly series! Some I joined (like Inktober 2021 and the Summer Doodle Series), and some I created (Doodletober and Doodlemas). It’s fun to create some prompts and follow others!

blog graphics โžผ

I’ve enjoyed combining handwriting and doodling to decorate my blog’s posts and pages! You’ll find a lot of happy messages, smiley faces, and cute dividers.

doodle lyrics โžผ

I’ve done something different with nearly every single doodle lyrics post! Whether I added a touch of digital color, wrote the lyrics in colored Sharpies, added embellishments, used digital text instead of handwritten, or used the same black Sharpie for every single part, I incredibly enjoy this series.

Depending on the song, I would doodle the first few verses, the chorus, or recently, the entire song! I’ve also done a nice mix of taking song requests and doodling my favorite songs. It’s been interesting to see which songs (or parts of songs) I couldn’t think of doodles for. The imagery of a song and my connection to it (or lack thereof) makes a huge difference!

face shape โžผ

With the first style, the eyes were small and farther apart. The doodles’ eyes have slowly gotten closer over the last two years, haha! The face is one of the most important part of my doodles, so making them cheery, cute, and happy was one of my main focuses.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I love sharpies! I have a container of them and keep collecting them. I use them for adult coloring and theyโ€™re my favorite kind of marker to use. I try to color things made of card stock because sharpies can bleed so muchโ€ฆ.

I thought you did digital doodles. How did you upload your doodles? Do you use a scanner or a tablet? Iโ€™m curious as to how you upload your drawings! The avocado one made me laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿฅ‘
