one-word story prompts: {eigengrau}

Hello!! Welcome back to my blog ❤️ Today I’m introducing to you a brand new post series! 😍 it will give me the chance to do more creative writing, as well as involve you guys in my content!

This is the first One-Word Story Prompts post 📝💕 Basically I’ll reach out to the awesome bloggers I know, request a single word from them for my prompt, then write a short story including that word/theme! You’re also welcome to hit me up in the comments or through my Contact page if you have an epic prompt idea, as well 😄💖

Let’s get started with today’s!

D @ Random Specific Thoughts provided me with this post’s prompt! She’s one of my closest blogging friends, and her blog is really cool. She shares poetry, literary articles – oh and she has a gorgeous book blog as well! Don’t hesitate to check out her sites – you won’t regret it! 😍❤️

When I asked her for a prompt, she asked me what word (easy, moderate, or difficult) would I like? and I said difficult! Thus, this very interesting word (eigengrau) and my very interesting story, became the focus of this post. 😎😂 I hope you enjoy!!

“Tyler! Tyler,” Caleb shouted as he bustled back into the room.

With his eyes closed, Tyler tapped the playlist to pause and slid his headphones down to his neck. This was the third interruption in – what, three minutes? – and his older brother patience was already incredibly thin. “What is it now, Caleb,” he said, dropping the question intonation with resignation.

“I’ve found it.”

The wonder and belief in the little boy’s voice piqued Tyler’s interest. He glanced over, trying to appear mildly intrigued.

“I’ve found the portal.”

Tyler chuckled now, translating Caleb’s awe into childhood disillusionment. “Cool, bro,” he said, swiping the playlist back to life. “Have fun with it,” he added a bit louder to hear his own voice over the din.

It appeared that Caleb was mouthing a sentence to him now, but Tyler tried to ignore it. He was vibing, listening to music, thinking about texting that girl who slid him a smile the day before-

His arm was being shaken. Tyler slid Caleb a frown, who was now right in the older boy’s face. “What?” he said, halting the noise and keeping the headphones on.

“You gotta enter it with me. Please, Tyler.”

Tyler let his head fall back onto the neck rest of his gaming chair. Alright. Fine – he’d help Caleb through the portal if it meant he could vibe and game in peace. Shifting the headphones onto his gaming keyboard, which lit up vibrantly in a feeble attempt to make Tyler stay, he let himself get dragged to Caleb’s bedroom, all the way to his little brother’s closet.

“So where’s the portal? Do you see any obsidian?” Tyler joked, making a slick Minecraft reference that went right over Caleb’s head. Tyler blinked when Caleb shut the door, enveloping them in darkness. “I hope this isn’t a trick,” Tyler added.

“Close your eyes. Tell me what you see,” Caleb said beseechingly.

Tyler’s eyes slid shut. He gasped slowly. “Eigengrau,” he said.

“What? What does that mean?” Caleb sounded like he was excited and about to cry at the same time.

“I can see the other side,” Caleb moaned. He put his arms out in front of him like a zombie, which was pointless because they were in total darkness. He also managed to bump Caleb, which sent the poor boy reeling.

“AGHHH! They got me!” A thump sounded on the floor. Tyler imagined that Caleb was now in a pile on the carpet.

“Boys?” Their mother’s muffled voice came to them from the other side of the door. “What are you doing in there?”

“We’re entering the eigengrau,” Tyler called.

“Where are you, Tyler? Have you crossed to the other side?” Caleb called back, as if Tyler was very far away.

“Yes! I’m standing somewhere in Germany… the world’s a beautiful shade of-“

“Tyler, what in the world-” The closet door flew open, revealing their mom holding a laundry basket.

“That… was…”- Caleb stood up -“AWESOME!”

Their mom smiled and shook her head. “You two are silly.”

“Thanks for coming with me, Tyler,” Caleb said, marching right behind Tyler as he made his way back to the office. “How about those stars? Did you see them in your eyes?”

“What, phosphenes?” Tyler chuckled when he saw Caleb’s stunned expression. “That’s a teleport for another day.”

“Eigengrau” is the German word for the gray-black you see when you close your eyes in perfect darkness!

I hope you had fun reading that! 😂👏 Initially I was going to cast a mom and her little boy, but then I came up with Tyler’s personality and went with the brothers instead.

Thanks again for the epic prompt, D! I had a blast writing this funny story with it!

How’d you like the story? Do you have any one word story prompts? I’d love to read them!
