Hey there chickadees! This is Maggie coming at you on Chickadee Lover Maggie, and it feels very weird to be publishing this post at a different time of day! If you’re in the mood to read a primarily spoiler-free book review today, you’re in luck. Let’s see what I read!

Title: I Pledge Allegiance
Author: Chris Lynch
Genre: YA Historical fiction
Publication Year: 2011
Summary: Four boys from Massachusetts join the Vietnam War. In book one, Morris gives his perspective in the US Navy.
Series Placement: 1/4
“*gasp* this looks perfect!” Right before I’d finished browsing a thrift store and I was going to check out, I spotted the first and second book in this series in the kids’ section. I was instantly intrigued and simultaneously stoked! I hadn’t thought of it until that moment: a perfect way for me to research history (as someone who doesn’t like graphic descriptions of violence) is through books written for a younger audience!
things I liked:
- all the main characters
- the author’s writing style
- the various perspectives on war
things I didn’t like:
- a few graphic descriptions of war
- one character’s dad
- how short the book was 😉
Ok, first thing’s first, I wouldn’t change a thing about this book. Despite the fact that I chose three things I didn’t like about it, the handful of violent descriptions and one cold-hearted father was necessary for the accuracy of the story.
The focus of I Pledge Allegiance was on how several different boys responded to being drafted, not on the violence and blood that was shed during the Vietnam War. Chris Lynch did an awesome job with it! His writing style really made me think and challenged the way I view the world, exposing me to the reality that belonged to many people in the 1960s.
I give this book 9/10 stars! It wasn’t the best book I’ve read, but it’s up there on my list of books I really enjoyed.
Thanks for reading! I wrote this review sometime last week but I’m doing blog planning right now and thought I’d go ahead and share this because I’m sharing book reviews on Fridays at the moment. 🙂 (*quickly goes and checks to make sure it is in fact Friday*)
